Ikea Bench Storage

JillMarch 30, 2015 at 11:13 PMHi there. So sorry you are having trouble. We used the Capita legs from Ikea and I don't remember having any trouble. We used the screws that came with the legs, I think each leg has 4 screws. We had to pre-drill a small hole first then hand-screw in the legs, but they went in tight and stayed tight. I don't think our bench is hollow. Ikea doesn't make and sell the bench we used (Expedit shelving unit) so maybe the Kallax unit Ikea sells now is hollow.Delete

Ikea Bench Storage

IKEA hack – shelving unit turned into a window bench for my gender neutral nursery. I used the Kallax shelving unit and two storage bins from Ikea, a piece of MDF board (cut at Home Depot), cushion foam from Home Depot, fabric of choice and quilt batting from Walmart.

Lauren WatsonFebruary 20, 2016 at 8:47 PMSorry, another question. What is the depth of the seat? I've been looking for ikea furniture and can find ones at about 40cm deep. Is this deep enough for a seat? Also, there's no ikea close to where I live so I'm looking elsewhere for similar shelves, but not really sure how deep they need to be to be able to sit on comfortably . Thank you. ReplyDelete

Ikea Bench Storage

I've seen similar shelves at Ikea that are shorter and even shelving units from Home Depot, Walmart, Kmart, etc. When I started, I was looking for something slightly shorter myself, but Ikea only had the long one at that time. Good luck!

Now comes the cushion part of the bench. Several tutorials I saw skipped this step, but I would recommend adding quilt batting first, before the fabric. I bought a humongous bag of quilt batting at Walmart for about $5. First set the piece of quilt batting on the floor/table/bench, then the foam, then the MDF board.

AnonymousApril 5, 2016 at 12:11 PMI used this idea to make a bench for an old van conversion that I re-purposed for camping. The bins hold my clothes, towels, etc, and the top works as a night stand for my lantern, kleenx, and book as well as a bench. I had to find a three shelf bookcase that could hold my weight to fit the area, but found one on amazon that was reasonable. Making the cushion is next.ReplyDelete

Lauren WatsonFebruary 20, 2016 at 4:13 AMThis project looks perfect. Good to see on ikea that the shelf isn't expensive! I was wondering what size storage boxes you used ? They seem to fit seamlessly, even with the shelf “laying down” ( as its meant to be upright). Thanks. ReplyDelete

This clever upcycle magically creates entry storage where there once was none. Tucked into a corner, it offers spots for hanging coats and purses, while a box (hacked out of shelving) hides clutter.Get the tutorial at IKEA Hackers »

AnonymousJune 18, 2014 at 8:36 AMAwesome! Exactly what I'm looking for. The Kallax shelving is not as tall (long) as the Expedit but it should work. Can you tell me how you stabilized the shelves to make them permanently vertical? Also, on the off-chance that Ikea has a few 6' Expedit shelving units left, do you still have that Article Number? Thank you! ReplyDelete

threelittleboysJune 28, 2016 at 7:07 AMWe have the ikea trofast white shelves and the natural wood shelves, both the one with three openings and the one that looks like a stair step. While the white trofast shelves are definitely not sturdy enough, the wood trofast shelves are extremely heavy and have held together very well. I have 3 boys ages 8, 8, and 12, and they have climbed all over them for years and years and years with no damage or signs of weakening. I would absolutely say the natural wood trofast set that has the three openings, not the stairsteps shape, would work perfectly if the length is right. I'm considering putting two of those together under each window myself.Delete

IKEA’s uber popular Hemnes line features a classic style, allowing each individual piece to come together beautifully in an entryway. Here, a bookcase, TV unit, and wall bridging shelf sync up to create a custom built-in unit.

This skinny shelf offers enough space for nine (!) hooks so you’ll never find anyone’s jacket on the floor. Plus, the ledge on top provides a nook for keys, mail, or even art.See more at IKEA Share Space »

Thanks for the great tutorial! I tried my hand and blogged about it (of course linking back here). It was my first ever attempt at any type of upholstery, and it went great! In regards to sturdiness, I used a Walmart cheap-o thing and it works great for my kids, although I wouldn't jump on it, so I'm sure the Ikea one is totally safe. Thanks again!

I’ve had many requests to do a Window Bench tutorial from my Nursery Reveal post. It was something I saw myself on pinterest and other blogs but had a hard time finding a good tutorial, and there’s nothing more I’d like than for you to make one yourself! It has made such a big difference in our nursery and our living room. That’s right, we made two!

Simply grab some 3 inch screws, and screw them into the MDF board from underneath the bench. We screwed 2 into each end, plus another set in the middle to hold it on tight.

RepliesMommy VignettesOctober 18, 2015 at 9:13 PMYes it has held up extremely well. I don't have several adults sitting on it at one time usually, but we have had it for almost 3 years now and have seen no signs of damage or wear and tear on the bench or legs. And we have two kids who climb on it all the time!DeleteReply
