Baby Rooms Ideas
Baby nurseries should be designed to please adults too. Your child might not remember the stylish crib (or those amazingly chic curtains you bought to contrast the stripes you painted on the walls), but they will remember the feeling of love and security that comes from being in a nursery you both enjoy. As you browse nursery ideas, keep in mind which features will make you most comfortable — if you’re comfortable and relaxed, it’s likely your baby will be too. How do I choose baby girl room ideas?Nurseries for girls can range from soft and sweet to bold and bright. Colors play an important role in girls’ nursery designs; while pink is the obvious color choice for such baby rooms, don’t feel like you have to conform to this standard. Pick a color that you like — maybe an elegant deep purple or a soft coral, and incorporate it into the room so that it’s not overbearing. Don’t be afraid to use patterns in wallpaper, rugs and curtains to introduce your color into baby rooms. Mixing and matching feminine florals, solids and geometrics in coordinating colors can help achieve a layered look and be visually stimulating for your baby girl. How do I choose baby boy room ideas? When it comes to baby room ideas for the little guy, picking a theme can be more important than color. Most nursery themes for boys use a similar color palette: white, blues, greens and maybe a hint of red. So think about what toys or hobbies your boy might grow up to like; sports, motor vehicles (cars, trains and planes) and the great outdoors are perfect starting points for your boy nursery ideas. You can even go with something as simple and masculine as plaid. With plain furniture, you can use toys, bedding and fun wall decals or photos as nursery decor to bring the theme to life throughout the space. How do I decorate a gender neutral nursery?Finding good neutral nursery decorating ideas is easier than you might think. If you want to be surprised, or are lucky enough to have twins of different genders, a neutral nursery design will be welcoming to all small bundles of joy. Neutral does not have to be boring. Play with mixing shades of blues, greens, yellows and oranges, and bring in some metallic or wood accents to tie things together. Have fun with the furniture and textures in the room. Look for pieces that will transition well to either gender. Animals and outdoor motifs, such as nautical or beach themes, are great neutral nursery room ideas. If you find something you like, go for it! Make sure you are using products that will be safe for your child once they start crawling, climbing and walking — it happens sooner than you might think.

Baby Room Themes: Easy as ABCKatie Stephenson of Art Wall Online built her nursery around Ida Pearle’s charming set of colorful alphabet cards, which gave the room an anything-goes color scheme. “I didn’t want a particular 2 or 3-color palette, I wanted anything I brought in to work in the room, no matter the color,” says Stephenson. “I also didn’t want ‘baby’ colors like baby blue, light pink and light green. The colors in the room and bright and cheery.”
Earthy Baby Room DesignNot sure where to start when creating a nursery? Choose a piece or two you love, and go from there, like Leah Steen of Revival Home & Garden did for her daughter’s room. “My inspiration for the nursery was the brown/white Dwell bedding I found and a fabulous baby blanket that had bright green polka-dots,” says Steen. “I didn’t know the baby’s sex at the time, so I thought the chocolate brown and green would be great for a boy or girl. I had my mom make the curtains to tie the seemingly disparate colors together, and I have some fun vintage art sprinkled around the room that bring in the browns and the orange of the Eames rocker.”
I’m about to have my third baby, who will almost definitely be my last (sniff). I am determined to get every last bit out of babyhood and soak up every bit of baby bliss that I can, hoping that it will get me through any later twangs of baby fever.
Wild Child Nursery RoomZebra print in the nursery? In the hands of Karly Hand, one half of the blog Design Crisis, it totally worked for son Eero’s room. “I knew I didn’t want a typical baby blue room with any of the theme decor sold at baby stores.” Hand says. “I saw several great rooms out there and the ones I was drawn to most used a lot of high contrast black and white. Knowing that babies love black and white patterns, I took it and ran.”
Baby Girl Room Ideas: Modern PinkWant to do pink for your baby’s room, but in a modern way? Nicole Balch of Making It Lovely used shades of the color throughout her home, so it was only natural to use it for daughter Eleanor’s room too. “I knew I wanted to use pink, but not in a sugary sweet pastel way,” says Balch. “All of the black and dark brown elements help to keep the room feeling grounded.”

Nautical Baby NurseryBlogger Joanna Goddard of A Cup of Jo wanted to give son Toby’s room a nautical feel as a nod to her grandparents’ fishing village in Cornwall, England. The sailboat mobile, a gift from Goddard’s siblings, has the number of her grandparents’ boat embroidered onto the one of the sails. The piece de la resistance is the hand-painted cloud blackout shade, which creates a focal point out of something that could have been ordinary. “Our friend and interior designer Jenny Komenda, who helped us decorate the nursery, made it herself, and it gives the room an open and breezy feel, even when I’m up with the baby in the middle of the night,” says Goddard.
Choosing Baby Room ColorsThis gray and mustard nursery from blogger Melanie Bauer proves you can still have a nursery with personality even if you don’t know the baby’s gender. “ Leighton’s nursery is also half of my home studio space. Since we weren’t finding out her gender beforehand, I decided to go with what would make me happy,” she says. “I was and still am in love with the grey/yellow color scheme.”
Unique Baby Rooms: The Dark SideBlack walls in the nursery? Lauren Bradshaw of Lauren Alane went bold with rich dark color for the walls in son Henry’s room. “I saw Jenna Lyons’ home in Domino Magazine, and her son’s nursery was one of my favorites. Her nursery is dark but very inviting,” says Bradshaw. “Henry’s room gets so much natural light throughout the day, and the dark walls make it feel cozy even in the bright Florida sun.”
